Kangana moved to Mumbai to try her luck in movies and received the offer for Mahesh Bhatt's 2006 film Gangster. During September 2005 Bollywood Film-maker Anurag Basu spotted her having coffee in a cafe in Bombay, and signed her up for this movie.

The film was critically and commercially successful and her performance was especially applauded. Taran Adarsh from indiaFM noted, " Kangana Ranaut is not just a photogenic face, but also a first-rate actor. It's rare for an actor to get such a difficult role in her very first film and its all the more difficult for the newcomer to carry it off with elan. But Kangana takes to her role of Simran like a fish takes to water. An actor to watch! "
This was followed by another acclaimed performance in Woh Lamhe (2006). Taran Adarsh wrote that, " Kangana Ranaut gets the role of a lifetime in her second film itself and the actor sinks her teeth into it and delivers an astounding performance. If you've ever interacted with Parveen Babi, even briefly, you'd see a replica of the glamorous star in Kangana. Her styling is also excellent. "
Later Kangana starred in yet another Anurag Basu's hit film Life In A... Metro as a confused girl who is looking for a real love and in Shakalaka Boom Boom (2007) as an aspiring singer. Kangana's sensitive portrayal in the former as a confused girl who is looking for a real love , earned her rave reviews. Raja Sen from rediff.com noted, " Maybe it's Kangana Ranaut's accent, for one can't really complain about the pretty, interesting actress. The pert young thing is, incredibly, both refreshing as a daisy and darkly compelling as a vampire, and manages to herd her emotions well, playing a complex role but hardly ever overreaching. This is an unconventionally talented actress moving up steadily, and her straight-hair-n-specs look will win her even more fans.
Kangana was announced as heroine of Jeeva's forthcoming Tamil venture, Dhaam Dhoom on February 19, 2007.
Kangana has at present, a current offer to star in a US-based film entitled "Between the Night and the Moon"(2009). Personal Quotes:
Kangana Ranaut says, "I schooled in Himachal Pradesh. I had taken up science and, initially, wanted to become a doctor. There are few career options for students of science though, so I shifted to Delhi and decided to try theater instead. I joined a group called Ashmita, and did two plays there -- Madhavi and Rakht Kalyan. As I was still unsure of what I wanted to do, I began sending photographs of myself to advertising agencies. I even took up classes in French because I thought of shifting to Paris, where models have always had a chance." (from interview 5-4-2006)

Kangana Ranaut says, "I come from a middle class family, and my parents weren't too supportive of my career choices. My father is a businessman, and my mother is a schoolteacher. They would always discuss my career whenever I'd visit them, but they are now very happy as Gangster is doing well. In fact, Himachal Pradesh is proud of me! I keep getting calls from there. I'm very happy now, but I'm sure that when I'm older, I will miss being a student and not going to college. I should be writing love letters at this age. Instead, I'm working day and night. Then again, you can't get everything in life." (From interview 5-4-2006)

Kangana Ranaut says, "My biggest asset is that I know how to learn and that, I believe will help me in the long run."
